As time has progressed, technology has improved and the capability of the latest equipment really gives a huge amount of increased functionality.
Sending video across lengthy cables is now not required, because you can guarantee the quality of images and video sent accross regular CAT 5/6 cable.
You can send 4K video and audio through technology called HDBaseT, which utilises a sender and a receiver at either end of a CAT 6 Network cable. There is a theoretical length limit of 150m though for this technology, so this is where AV over IP comes in.
AV Over IP is a technology that still consists of a transmitter and a receiver, however these two devices can be connected anywhere on a network, and they both have their own IP address.
Because the transmitter and the receiver are addressable and connect anywhere on the network, there is no theoretical distance limit in terms of sending audio and video.
The other benefit is that logging and monitoring systems can monitor the uptime and performance of these devices. Some systems even have monitoring apps that can be used in conjunction with those devices.
Even video routing can be dynamically allocated via an app.
